Successful automation usually starts with a specific operational problem rather than a platform feature. Look for a process that is frequent, rules-based and frustrating for the people who perform it.
Start with the work, not the tool
Document the steps, hand-offs, delays and sources of rework. Speak with the people who manage the process and identify what a better outcome would look like.
Choose a sensible first use case
- It happens often enough to justify improvement.
- The process has a clear business owner.
- The information and decision rules are reasonably understood.
- The expected benefit can be observed after launch.
Design for adoption
Keep the first version focused, test with real users and plan for support and improvement. The goal is a sustainable process, not simply a new app.
